Preschool teachers often form a beautiful bond with the wee ones in their care as they nurture their growing minds. Thanks to that strong tie one preschool teacher from Iowa carved out with a little boy in her care, a dad now has a second chance at life.
Nancy Bleuer, 54, was chatting with her student, four-year-old Camden, when she discovered his daddy was sick. Very sick. Nancy felt compelled to call the dad, 34-year-old Darreld Petersen, to check on him. What she learned broke her heart.
The young dad was in renal kidney failure and his kidney was functioning at only 20 percent. He was placed on dialysis in January and naturally, Camden was scared. So Nancy decided to do something about it.
This kind-hearted woman didn’t offer to prepare meals for the family or complete other tasks. She offered her own kidney. Nancy was tested to see if she was a match and miraculously, she was. When she found out, she started filling out the paperwork immediately. Without hesitation.
“I was really excited about it. I was ecstatic. I don’t know what I would’ve done for closure if I wasn’t [a match].”
Camden’s daddy couldn’t believe his little boy’s preschool teacher would help him in such a huge way. She was saving his life. He was beyond grateful.
“It’s just amazing. There are people waiting every day for a kidney, for an organ in general. I wish there were more people like her. She’s giving me a second chance at life.”
When the Petersen family learned of the match, Camden wanted to thank his teacher, too. They surprised her at school with flowers.
“Here was Darreld [Petersen] and his son with a dozen huge roses and I’m crying but of course, it was very nice, The day he found out, I said, ‘We’re on, it’s a go.’ Then, he came over and hugged me and he said, ‘Oh my gosh.’ It was a very cool response and it’s good to know that I’ll be able to go to Camden’s high school graduation one day and talk about this and think, ‘Well, that was crazy.'”
Camden is so happy that his daddy’s life is being saved and it’s even more meaningful because it’s by someone he knows and loves. Nancy is overjoyed that she can help her precious student enjoy many more years with his daddy.
What a wonderful story and an incredible gift! We wish them both a healthy and speedy recovery.
